The Great Whale Count has been Re-Scheduled!

As you may recall, the Great Whale Count was supposed to take place this past Saturday... Due to last weekend's tsunami scare, it has been re-scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2010. Since some of the scheduled participants are visitors who will no longer be in Maui on the 6th, there may still be spots available! This sounds like a great way for golfers to both enjoy a great round of golf AND help out the Pacific Whale Foundation!

These events all take place tomorrow, February 14th. I would LOVE to participate in some of these events. 1) The first event is a "Whale Photo Safari." Participants will get tips from expert wildlife photographers on how to get the very best photos on your whale-watching adventures. Any whale photos that I've taken in the past have never quite captured the magic of the moment so I could definitely use some tips from the experts! (you can see my whale photos near the end of this article about our daytrip to the Island of Lanai) 2) This next workshop, entitled "The Delicate Art of Watching Whales from Land" will help you better spot those sometimes elusive whales without having to hop on a boat! 3) Last, but not least, is the "VIP Whalewatch with International Experts!" I was sad to hear that Maui Land and Pineapple has gotten out of the pineapple business. Luckily, some great news came shortly afterwards! A brand new company, Haliimaile Pineapple Co. Ltd., has leased a large parcel of land from Maui Land and Pineapple. This new company will continue growing, harvesting and selling Maui-grown pineapple under the Maui-gold brand! I haven't heard yet whether or not the Kapalua Maui pineapple plantation tours will continue, but at least we'll still be able to buy those mouth-watering Maui pineapples!

I was watching someone's Maui vacation video just now, and I saw the strangest thing: Plant Grafitti. Where I'm from, people have been known to carve their initials into tree trunks... but I've never seen it done to a PLANT! The carved initials appeared as brown scars on a rather large, otherwise beautiful, green leaf. Hopefully this isn't a trend that will catch on! The plant would have been far more lovely without the initials!
